本所成立于 1994 年八月，为一有硕士班之独立所，每年招收五至八名研究生。本所主要目的在提供基础哲学训练，培养哲学研究人才。本所专注于西洋哲学，并以基础研究和科际整合为重心：一方面着重哲学基本领域（如知识论、伦理学、形上学）之教学与研究，另一方面亦注重哲学与其它学科之关联，以及对各种学科之方法论与理论基础之探讨，希望透过学科间之交流攻错、相互启发，从而增进科际间之互动。

本所之筹设，源自民国七十七年第十八次院士会议。会中丁邦新等十六位院士联署建议成立中国文哲研究所，经七十八年二月二十四日第十三届评议会第四次会议决议通过，报呈总统府核准，先行设立中国文哲研究所筹备处，推展设所事宜。
台湾哲学学会英文名称为 "Taiwan Philosophical Association"(缩写为 "TPA")。本会之主管机关为内政部；目的事业主管机关依章程所订宗旨、任务，主要为教育部。其目的事业应受各该事业主管机关之指导、监督。
