活性物质是由自驱动单元所组成的一类重要非平衡体系，普遍地存在于自然界之中，包括从纳米尺度的马达蛋白，到微米尺度的细菌，再到宏观尺度的鸟群等。活性物质由于在单粒子层面破缺了时间反演对称性，因此经常展现出自发的集群运动行为。活性物质集群行为是非平衡统计物理的重要研究方向，也是2021年Nobel物理学奖所涵盖的领域之一。
