《图书馆杂志》由上海市图书馆学会与上海图书馆合办，1982年1月创刊。初为季刊，1987 年起改为双月刊，1999年起改为月刊。1997年起，每年增发30万字的“理论学术年刊”，2003年起“年刊”采用书号方式正式出版。
本团体的名称为中国图书馆学会（以下简称本会）。英文译名为Library Society of China，缩写LSC。本会的前身是中华图书馆协会，成立于1925年，1927年成为国际图书馆协会联合会（IFLA）的发起单位之一。1979年7月9—16日，本会成立大会暨第一次会员代表大会在山西太原召开。同年8月加入中国科学技术协会。1981年5月，本会恢复了在国际图联（IFLA）的合法席位。
