西南大学新闻传媒学院组建于2006年4月，由原西南师范大学文学院的新闻系、播音与主持艺术专业，计算机与信息科学学院的广播电视编导专业，以及原西南农业大学信息中心等单位合并而成。学院现设有三个系：新闻学系、广播电视系、传播学系。设有三个本科专业：新闻学、广播电视编导、播音与主持艺术。有一个传播学硕士点（新闻传播、新媒体传播、影像传播）和中国现当代叙事文学、电影艺术理论、传媒教育技术方向的硕士。
国际新闻协会（International Press Institute ，IPI，也译作国际报业协会）成立于1950年，是最古老的全球新闻自由组织，宗旨是促进和保护新闻自由，改进新闻行业准则。该协会会员由来自世界120多个国家的编辑、媒体高级管理人员和新闻记者组成。
